350 SOG personnel deployed to hunt terrorists in J&K forests

Srinagar: In a major push to intensify counter-terror operations, around 350 personnel of the Special Operations Group (SOG) have been deployed across dense forests and rugged terrains of Jammu and Kashmir to track down Pakistan-backed terrorists hiding in remote areas.

The SOG, a specialised wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, is known for its expertise in handling anti-terror operations in difficult and hostile terrain. Officials said the latest deployment is aimed at strengthening operations in forested belts and deep valley regions where militants are believed to be taking shelter.

According to senior police officials, the newly deployed personnel have undergone rigorous training, including specialised combat preparation in challenging environments such as hilly and jungle terrains. A significant portion of this training was conducted in Andhra Pradesh, equipping the forces with advanced tactical skills required for high-risk operations.

An officer associated with the operation said, “These trained personnel will enhance our capability to conduct precise operations in dense forests and mountainous regions where terrorists often hide.” He added that the move marks a strategic shift in tackling militancy by focusing more on difficult terrains that were earlier less accessible. The deployment comes in the backdrop of recent terror incidents, including the deadly attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, where 26 people, including tourists, were killed. The incident highlighted the urgent need for improved ground operations in remote areas.

Officials believe that terrorists, many of whom are trained across the border, are currently using dense forests and steep valleys as safe havens. Intelligence inputs suggest the presence of launch pads near the international border, from where infiltration attempts are being planned. To complement the SOG operations, the Border Security Force (BSF) has deployed seven additional battalions along the international border. The objective is to prevent infiltration and tighten surveillance in vulnerable sectors.

Security experts say the combined deployment of SOG and BSF will significantly enhance India’s counter-terror grid in the region. The focus remains on eliminating terrorist threats while ensuring civilian safety. Authorities have reiterated that operations will continue in a sustained and coordinated manner until the threat is neutralised. The latest move is seen as a strong message to terror groups operating in the region.
