23 killed, over 50 injured in massive fire at Birch nightclub in Goa’s Arpora
Panaji: A massive fire broke out at the popular Birch nightclub located on Romeo Lane in Arpora, North Goa, late on Saturday night, killing 23 people, including several tourists, in a horrific incident. More than 50 others sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital.
According to preliminary reports, among the dead are three to four tourists, while the remaining victims are believed to be 19 staff members of the nightclub. The fire is suspected to have been triggered by a possible gas cylinder explosion in the kitchen area, though officials have not yet issued a formal confirmation regarding the cause.
Eyewitnesses described the explosion as extremely powerful, causing flames to engulf the entire building within seconds. Many of those inside had very little time to escape, leading to a high number of casualties from burns and smoke inhalation. Several bodies are said to be charred beyond recognition, hospital sources said.
Authorities have sent all bodies for post-mortem examinations. Officials also fear that the death toll may rise as some of the injured are in critical condition.
Soon after the incident, police sealed the nightclub and initiated an inquiry. The club’s owner and management have been detained for questioning. Sources alleged that the establishment had failed to comply with fire safety standards and may not have maintained proper emergency exits, which could have worsened the tragedy.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed deep grief over the incident. In a statement on X, he said, “Today is a day of great sorrow for all of us in Goa. The tragic fire in Arpora has claimed 23 precious lives. I am deeply pained by this unimaginable loss. My heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families.”
The Chief Minister visited the site and ordered a thorough investigation. “The inquiry will determine the exact cause of the fire, whether the building and fire safety norms were followed, and identify those responsible. Strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty. No negligence will be tolerated,” Sawant said.
The Arpora fire tragedy has raised serious concerns over fire safety compliance in Goa’s nightlife hotspots, which attract hundreds of visitors every weekend.
