Bengaluru Traffic Woes: Bengaluru’s citizens continue to struggle with the twin problems of heavy traffic and pothole-ridden roads, which have left commuters frustrated and exhausted. The situation has worsened to such an extent that several private companies are reportedly reconsidering their operations in the city due to mobility issues.
In a bid to find a sustainable solution, the Bengaluru Traffic Police and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) have revisited an old idea — the dedicated bus lane system.
The initiative was first introduced in 2019 on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) as an experiment and received positive feedback for improving traffic flow and reducing travel time. However, the project was discontinued after the commencement of the Namma Metro (BMRCL) construction works along the stretch.
Now, discussions have resumed to reintroduce the dedicated bus lane between Silk Board Junction and KR Puram. Preparations are already underway, with the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) expressing strong interest in supporting the project.
Traffic police officials believe that the move could significantly help regulate congestion on the ORR, which remains one of the busiest and most traffic-choked corridors in the city. The dedicated bus lane, they argue, will encourage more commuters to opt for public transport, thus easing the load on private vehicles and improving the overall traffic situation.
Currently, however, the implementation of the bus lane is dependent on the completion of the Blue Line metro construction, which is ongoing along the same stretch. Authorities have indicated that the bus lane will only be introduced after the metro work is finished to avoid logistical conflicts.
If both the metro line and the bus lane operate in tandem, officials believe the Outer Ring Road could finally see a long-term reduction in traffic chaos, offering much-needed relief to Bengaluru’s overburdened commuters.
