Train turns delivery ward: woman gives birth aboard Mangaluru–Bengaluru service

Mangaluru : In a dramatic and heartening incident, a moving train turned into an impromptu maternity ward when a pregnant woman delivered a baby onboard the Mangaluru–Bengaluru train, thanks to the timely intervention of fellow passengers.

The woman, who was travelling from Mangaluru to Mysuru, reportedly went into labour mid-journey, triggering panic among co-passengers. With no doctor available on the train and the situation becoming increasingly critical, passengers waited for nearly 30 minutes in the hope of medical assistance. However, as the woman’s condition worsened and labour pains intensified, swift action became inevitable.

Displaying remarkable presence of mind, women passengers stepped forward to help. Using available cloth and sarees, they created a makeshift enclosure to ensure privacy inside the coach. What followed was a tense yet coordinated effort, as the women collectively assisted in conducting the delivery under challenging conditions.

Despite the absence of medical facilities and concerns over heavy bleeding, the delivery was carried out successfully. Both the mother and newborn were reported to be stable immediately after the birth, bringing immense relief to passengers who had been anxiously monitoring the situation.

In response to the emergency, the train was halted at BC Road in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district. Railway authorities and local officials facilitated the immediate transfer of the mother and child to a nearby government hospital for further medical care.

Hospital sources later confirmed that both mother and baby are safe and under observation. Doctors noted that while the woman had experienced significant blood loss during delivery, timely intervention by passengers played a crucial role in ensuring a safe outcome.

The incident has drawn attention to the lack of onboard medical preparedness in long-distance trains, especially in emergency situations involving pregnant women. While Indian Railways has provisions for basic first aid, the absence of trained medical personnel on many routes continues to raise concerns.

Passengers and railway officials alike lauded the courage and quick thinking of the women who assisted in the delivery, turning a potentially life-threatening situation into a story of الإنسانية and solidarity.
