No confidence motion against Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti ?
Belagavi: Congress MLC Nagaraj Yadav has leveled serious allegations against Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, including corruption, illegal appointments, and phone tapping. Yadav has demanded that a no-confidence motion be initiated against Horatti in light of these accusations.
The tension between the two leaders has been visible during Council proceedings. During a recent Q&A session, Yadav raised issues against Horatti, prompting a heated exchange. Senior Congress leaders reportedly intervened to calm Yadav after the discussion escalated.
Responding to the allegations, Horatti challenged Yadav to produce evidence. He dismissed the claims as baseless, stating that making accusations without documentation is irresponsible and unbecoming.
Yadav, however, has argued that Horatti has misused his position to favor the ruling party while sidelining the opposition. He claimed that the Chairman denies opposition members opportunities to speak and uses his office for administrative bias. According to Yadav, Horatti even obtained phone call logs of subordinate staff and allegedly mismanaged recruitment processes.
Yadav also highlighted an incident involving C.T. Ravi, stating that when a complaint was filed against abusive language toward Lakshmi Hebbalkar, Horatti ignored it. He added that Horatti’s actions demonstrate a loss of ethical responsibility, and he suggested that resignation would be an appropriate course if moral standards were followed.
The Congress leader’s repeated allegations have sparked questions about whether this is a strategic move to push Horatti out of the Chairman’s chair.
Yadav has also indicated plans to discuss the issue within the Congress party, arguing that the ruling party has a numerical advantage in the Council, and the Chairman should not continue in office while such allegations persist. Analysts say that a no-confidence motion against Basavaraj Horatti in the coming days cannot be ruled out given the mounting political pressure and the opposition’s push for accountability.
The situation has intensified political debates in the Council, drawing attention to procedural ethics and the role of the Chairman in maintaining impartiality between the ruling party and the opposition.
