Mangaluru: In a significant development in the controversial Dharmasthala mass burial case, “Mask Man” Chinnayya, who had been lodged in Shivamogga central prison for over four months, was finally released on Tuesday evening after the court accepted the required sureties.
Though Chinnayya had secured bail earlier, his release was delayed for 23 days due to the inability to furnish surety, keeping him behind bars despite the bail order.
Chinnayya, who came to be popularly known as “Mask Man” for his masked appearances and claims related to the alleged mass burial case in Dharmasthala, had been granted bail by the Belthangady court on November 24.
The court had imposed stringent conditions, including a personal bond of ₹1 lakh, two sureties, and 12 additional conditions. However, the absence of willing sureties meant that Chinnayya continued to remain in judicial custody at Shivamogga jail.
The breakthrough came on December 17 when Chinnayya’s wife Mallika stepped forward and furnished a bond of ₹1 lakh. Along with her, two sureties and one guarantor were produced before the court, fulfilling all procedural requirements. Following this, the Belthangady court issued formal release orders, paving the way for Chinnayya’s exit from prison.
Family members, including Mallika and Chinnayya’s sister Ratna, immediately travelled to Shivamogga with the court order. Prison authorities completed the necessary formalities, and Chinnayya was released later in the evening, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding his continued incarceration.
Sources within the prison said that during his extended stay after being granted bail, Chinnayya remained largely withdrawn. Despite being surrounded by other inmates, he reportedly kept to himself, spoke very little, and appeared visibly distressed.
Jail officials indicated that the prolonged delay in securing surety had taken a toll on him mentally, as he had expected to walk free soon after bail was granted.
Chinnayya was arrested on August 23 following a prolonged inquiry into the Dharmasthala mass burial allegations, in which he emerged as an anonymous complainant and key figure.
After his arrest, he was placed under judicial custody on September 6 and subsequently shifted to Shivamogga jail. The case has since attracted widespread attention due to its sensitive nature and the serious allegations involved.
Financial constraints played a major role in delaying Chinnayya’s release. Despite being granted bail, neither alleged associates nor individuals linked to the so-called “burude gang” reportedly came forward to stand surety. This isolation reportedly deepened after his arrest, leaving his family to shoulder the responsibility of arranging the bail conditions.
With his release, fresh speculation has emerged over whether Chinnayya will now make public disclosures related to the Dharmasthala case. Legal observers note that his freedom could potentially alter the course of the investigation, depending on whether he chooses to cooperate further with authorities or speak out publicly about his claims.
At the same time, there is palpable unease among those who fear that Chinnayya, now out on bail, could level fresh allegations or reveal new details. Sources suggest that individuals allegedly associated with the burial controversy are closely watching his next moves.
While Chinnayya has not yet made any public statement after his release, his family has maintained that they are relieved the legal hurdle has finally been crossed. Legal experts point out that the case remains under investigation and that bail does not amount to acquittal.
As Chinnayya steps out of prison after nearly four months, all eyes are now on what comes next—whether his release will lead to new revelations, intensify the political and legal discourse around the Dharmasthala case, or quietly shift into the background as the investigation proceeds.
