Madiwala Community Seeks Scheduled Caste Status In Karnataka
Members of the Madiwala community held a large rally in Chikkaballapur, urging the Karnataka government to include the community under Scheduled Caste reservation based on an earlier study.
A large rally was held in Chikkaballapur as members of the Madiwala community renewed their demand for inclusion under the Scheduled Caste category in Karnataka.
The rally was organised jointly by the District Madiwala Association and the Scheduled Caste Struggle Committee. Community members gathered at Ambedkar Bhavan and marched towards the Chikkaballapur district administration office.
The protesters urged the state government to take an early decision on their long standing demand. They argued that the community should receive the benefits available under Scheduled Caste reservation and called for the government to consider the findings of an earlier study.
According to representatives of the community, Madiwala people have already been included in the Scheduled Caste category in 20 states and Union Territories across the country. They said Karnataka should also examine the community’s social and economic circumstances and take a decision based on the available evidence.
A study on the condition of the Madiwala community in Karnataka was reportedly conducted under anthropologist Professor Annapoornamma. Community representatives said the report has been submitted and indicates that the Madiwala community is eligible for consideration under the Scheduled Caste category.
The findings of the study have become an important part of the community’s current campaign. Protesters said the state government should take the report into account while examining their request.
During the rally, members expressed their concerns about the community’s current social and economic position and said greater government support was needed. They also maintained that inclusion under the Scheduled Caste category would provide access to reservation and other welfare opportunities available under the classification.
The gathering in Chikkaballapur was part of the community’s effort to bring renewed attention to the issue. Representatives called on the administration to communicate the next steps clearly and move the process forward.
The protesters ultimately appealed to the Karnataka government to consider their demand and take appropriate action based on the study report and applicable legal procedures.
