Lokayukta trap nets KP Agrahara police inspector while accepting ₹4 lakh bribe, video of drama goes viral
Bengaluru: The Karnataka Lokayukta intensified its crackdown on corruption with a high-profile trap operation that led to the arrest of a police inspector, who was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a ₹4 lakh bribe.
The incident triggered high drama at the spot, with the accused officer shouting at Lokayukta officials, and videos of the episode have since gone viral on social media. The arrested officer has been identified as Govindaraju, inspector of KP Agrahara police station.
According to Lokayukta officials, the inspector had allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹5 lakh in connection with a cheating case linked to a chit fund and investment fraud. He was reportedly caught while receiving the remaining ₹4 lakh, having already collected ₹1 lakh earlier.
The trap was executed near the CAR (CIR) Ground in Chamarajapet on Mysuru Road, where Govindaraju had allegedly asked the complainant to hand over the bribe amount. Acting on a complaint, Lokayukta officers conducted a surprise operation and apprehended the inspector on the spot.
The case originated from a complaint filed by Dhanaraj at KP Agrahara police station on January 22. He alleged that Suraj, Sujan and Srinivas had cheated him of ₹19 lakh by promising high returns on investment.
When he demanded the money back, the accused allegedly threatened him. A case was subsequently registered at the police station. During the course of investigation, a police team led by Inspector Govindaraju reportedly visited the houses of the accused.
It was during this period, officials allege, that the inspector demanded ₹5 lakh as illegal gratification to weaken the case registered under the BUDS Act and to avoid arresting the accused. Based on a complaint lodged by Mohammed Akbar, who is associated with the accused side, Lokayukta SP Shivaprakash Devaraju authorised the trap.
The operation was carefully planned, as the inspector had already accepted ₹1 lakh earlier and had fixed the CAR Ground as the location to collect the remaining amount.
As soon as Govindaraju accepted the cash, Lokayukta officers surrounded him. The inspector allegedly reacted aggressively, shouting at the officials and claiming he had not obstructed their duty. Despite the outburst, the Lokayukta team took him into custody and continued the investigation.
Confirming the arrest, SP Shivaprakash Devaraju said the case had been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act. “The inspector demanded ₹5 lakh and was caught while receiving ₹4 lakh. We are also probing whether other officials were involved in this incident,” he said. Further investigation is underway.
