Karnataka Tightens Border Vigil After Rise in Covid Deaths Reported in Andhra Pradesh

Karnataka has strengthened health surveillance along its Andhra Pradesh border after a rise in Covid related deaths triggered precautionary measures including screening checkpoints and emergency medical preparedness in border areas.

Karnataka has stepped up precautionary measures along its border with Andhra Pradesh following reports of an increase in Covid related deaths in the neighbouring state. Health authorities have intensified monitoring at key entry points to prevent the possible spread of infections into Karnataka, particularly in border regions considered vulnerable.

The focus has shifted to Pavagada in Tumakuru district, where officials have placed the area on high alert. Eight border routes connecting Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are now under continuous surveillance. Thermal screening of passengers is being carried out, while officials are also collecting travel histories to identify anyone who may require medical attention or observation.

Health department personnel and ASHA workers have been deployed at important checkpoints to monitor people entering the state. Officials said these precautionary arrangements will continue for the coming days as part of an effort to closely track the movement of travellers and respond quickly if any suspected cases emerge.

The decision follows reports from Andhra Pradesh indicating a rise in Covid infections along with four recent deaths linked to the virus. Authorities have expressed particular concern over districts close to the Karnataka border, prompting the state administration to strengthen preventive measures before any local transmission is detected.

Despite the heightened alert, officials confirmed that no positive Covid cases have been detected at the Karnataka border checkpoints so far. Continuous screening over the past two days has not identified any infected travellers, but surveillance remains in place as a precaution.

To ensure preparedness, the district administration has also activated a Covid Care Centre at the Pavagada Taluk Hospital. Hospital authorities have arranged beds, oxygen support and other essential medical facilities so that treatment can begin immediately if the need arises. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and cooperate with health officials during the ongoing monitoring exercise.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr G Parameshwara also addressed the situation, noting that Covid related deaths had been reported in neighbouring districts of Andhra Pradesh. He said strict instructions had been issued to monitor movement across the border and isolate anyone showing symptoms if required. He also stressed the importance of maintaining public health by ensuring safe drinking water and cleaning water storage tanks regularly to prevent additional health risks.

Apart from Covid, officials are also monitoring seasonal diseases such as dengue and chikungunya in the region. The government believes that strengthening surveillance at the border and improving healthcare preparedness will help reduce the risk of disease transmission while ensuring that medical services are ready to respond if the situation changes.

With health authorities maintaining close watch and emergency arrangements already in place, Karnataka aims to stay ahead of any potential outbreak. Officials have urged the public to remain alert, follow health advisories and avoid unnecessary panic as the state continues its preventive efforts.
