Karnataka government intervenes to end caste discrimination, opens salon for equal access

Gadag: In a strong administrative intervention against caste-based discrimination, the Karnataka government has established a new barber shop in Singatalur village of Mundargi taluk in Gadag district after traditional barbers allegedly refused to provide services to Dalits.

The move comes after longstanding complaints that members of the Dalit community were denied basic grooming services due to entrenched caste practices. The situation escalated when Dalit youths demanded equal treatment at the village’s only salon, which had been operating with official approval from the Gram Panchayat.

When the youths insisted on their right to access services, the salon was abruptly shut down, creating inconvenience for the entire village. Residents were forced to travel to nearby villages for haircuts and shaving, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.

Officials from the Social Welfare Department and Revenue Department stepped in and conducted multiple rounds of discussions with members of the Hadapad community, who traditionally provide barber services. Despite counseling and issuance of notices, the barbers reportedly remained firm in their refusal.

Faced with continued resistance, authorities took decisive action by establishing a government-supported barber shop to ensure equal access to services. The new salon was inaugurated on February 26 in the presence of Tahsildar Erriswamy and senior district officials.

Basavaraj Hadapad from neighboring Tippapur village was identified and supported by the Social Welfare Department to operate the facility. The administration said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding constitutional rights and ensuring dignity and equality for all citizens.

Officials emphasized that discrimination in any form will not be tolerated and assured strict monitoring to prevent recurrence. The intervention has been widely seen as a significant step toward social inclusion and enforcement of anti-discrimination norms in rural Karnataka.

The development underscores the ongoing challenges of caste-based practices in rural areas, even as authorities intensify efforts to promote equality and inclusive access to public services.
