Karnataka govt continues nominated board and authority chiefs to avoid administrative vacuum
Bengaluru: In a significant administrative decision, the Karnataka government has extended the tenure of nominated chairpersons heading various corporations, boards, and statutory authorities across the state.
The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) issued the order, allowing existing chairpersons to continue until further instructions are issued.
The order applies to chairpersons whose terms have expired or are nearing completion. Administrative departments have been directed to issue necessary notifications immediately so that governance and institutional functioning remain uninterrupted.
The extension ensures continuity in leadership across key development authorities and government-linked institutions. DPAR Deputy Secretary Abhijin B., in the official communication, clarified that the decision was taken to maintain administrative stability and ensure that statutory bodies continue functioning without disruption.
Departments have also been instructed to follow the relevant legal provisions while issuing continuation notifications. The move comes amid political and administrative discussions regarding leadership positions in various authorities.
Recently, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to extend the tenure of chairpersons in certain development authorities. He had highlighted that several key posts were left vacant without fresh appointments, potentially affecting governance and project implementation.
Previously, the state government had nominated several leaders, including district Congress presidents and party office-bearers, to head corporations and boards for a two-year term or until further orders. Many of these appointments carried the rank and status of Minister of State, reflecting their administrative significance.
However, some development and planning authority chairpersons were not included in earlier extension orders, leading to concerns about leadership gaps. Shivakumar had requested their continuation until suitable replacements were appointed.
With the latest order now in effect, the government has ensured that all nominated chairpersons will continue in their positions until new appointments are made or revised instructions are issued. Officials believe this step will help sustain governance efficiency and ensure the smooth execution of public welfare programs and development works across Karnataka.
