Global artist Jaume Plensa’s ‘Bengaluru’s Soul’ becomes new attraction at airport T2

Bengaluru ; The Terminal 2 (T2) of Kempegowda International Airport has added yet another global attraction with the unveiling of a striking 16-foot sculpture titled “Bengaluru’s Soul” by world-renowned Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. The grand installation, inaugurated on Saturday evening, is already emerging as a popular ‘Instagram spot’ for travelers passing through the airport.
The monumental artwork is a celebration of global and local identity, incorporating alphabets from multiple languages including Kannada, Arabic, Chinese, Tamil, Korean, Greek, Hindi, and Latin. Alongside linguistic elements, mathematical symbols have also been intricately woven into the structure, symbolizing the fusion of logic and creativity. The sculpture stands as a tribute to Bengaluru’s cosmopolitan spirit, reflecting its reputation as a hub of innovation, culture, and diversity. The carefully interlaced characters form a visually compelling structure that resonates with the city’s pluralistic ethos.
The installation was made possible through the initiative of Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson of the Biocon Group, who invited Plensa to create the artwork. According to Shaw, public art plays a vital role in humanizing urban spaces and fostering a shared cultural identity. The sculpture was officially unveiled by Juan Antonio March Pujol, Spain’s Ambassador to India, highlighting the cultural collaboration between the two nations.
Speaking about his creation, Plensa emphasized his desire to bring beauty into the everyday lives of people who may not have access to art galleries. Known for his iconic installations in global cities such as Chicago, New York, and London, the artist described the Bengaluru sculpture as a meaningful addition to one of India’s most prominent airports. The installation not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the terminal but also positions the airport as a cultural landmark, offering travelers a moment of reflection and artistic engagement.
