Court deny relief to Rajiv Gowda in threat case against civic official
Chikkaballapur: Troubles have mounted for Congress leader Rajeev Gowda in connection with a case involving alleged threats and verbal abuse against Shidlaghatta City Municipal Council Commissioner Amruta Gowda.
The Congress party has expelled Rajeev Gowda from its primary membership, while both the sessions court and the High Court have refused to grant him relief. His anticipatory bail plea has been rejected, and he continues to remain untraceable, deepening the controversy.
The case dates back to an incident in which banners erected near Kote Circle in Shidlaghatta were removed by municipal authorities, citing obstruction to traffic and violation of norms. Angered by the removal, Rajeev Gowda allegedly made a phone call to Commissioner Amruta Gowda, during which he used obscene language and issued threats.
Following this, the commissioner lodged a formal complaint with senior officials and later with the police. Based on her complaint, Shidlaghatta police registered a case and initiated action against Rajeev Gowda. He subsequently approached the Chikkaballapur Second Additional Sessions Court seeking anticipatory bail.
After hearing arguments from both sides—defended by advocate Vivek Subbareddy and opposed by public prosecutor Sumathi Shantha Mary—the court reserved its order and later dismissed the bail plea.
Rajeev Gowda also moved the High Court seeking to quash the proceedings. However, the High Court dismissed his petition, making strong observations on responsible conduct and the irreversible impact of abusive language.
The court noted that an apology cannot undo the damage caused by threats and verbal abuse, especially when directed at a public servant discharging official duties.
Adding to his woes, the Congress party initiated disciplinary action and expelled Rajeev Gowda, stating that such conduct was against party values and brought disrepute to the organisation. The expulsion is seen as a message of zero tolerance toward intimidation of women officers and misuse of political influence.
Police have issued four notices to Rajeev Gowda in connection with the case. However, he is reportedly absconding, with his residence locked and family members unavailable. This has led to criticism and suspicion that influential backing may be delaying his arrest, allegations the police have not officially responded to.
The incident has sparked a wider debate on the safety of women officers, accountability of political leaders, and the need for strict action against those who attempt to intimidate public servants.
