Congress retains Bagalakote seat as Umesh Meti wins by record margin

Bagalakote : The bypoll to the Bagalakote Assembly constituency, necessitated by the demise of senior leader H.Y. Meti, has been won convincingly by Congress candidate Umesh Meti. With this victory, the Indian National Congress has successfully retained the seat, reinforcing its hold in the region.
Umesh Meti, contesting his first election, defeated BJP candidate Veeranna Charantimath by a margin of 21,866 votes. While Charantimath put up a strong fight, he fell short in the final tally. According to official figures, Umesh Meti secured 97,941 votes, while Charantimath managed 76,075 votes.
The by-election carried emotional significance, as the Congress decided to field a member of the late leader’s family. Following the passing of H.Y. Meti, the party chose his son Umesh Meti as its candidate, banking on both legacy and public goodwill. The strategy appears to have paid off, with voters extending strong support to the newcomer.
Notably, the victory margin has set a new record in the constituency. Umesh Meti’s lead of over 21,000 votes surpasses the previous highest margin recorded in the seat. In the 2018 Assembly elections, Veeranna Charantimath had registered a win with a margin of 15,934 votes, which until now stood as the largest in Bagalakote.
Reacting to the win, family members expressed both joy and emotion. Umesh Meti’s brother, Mallikarjun Meti, described the result as a deeply moving moment. “This victory brings peace to our father’s soul. The people who supported our father have now placed their trust in my brother,” he said, thanking party leaders, including the Chief Minister, ministers, and voters for their support.
Political observers note that the result not only reflects sympathy for the late leader but also indicates sustained support for the Congress in the constituency. The party’s decision to field a family member appears to have resonated well with voters, translating into a decisive mandate.
For the BJP, the defeat marks a missed opportunity to capture the seat despite a competitive campaign. Analysts suggest that while the party managed to consolidate its base, it could not overcome the emotional and political advantage held by the Congress candidate.
With this win, Umesh Meti is set to enter the Assembly, marking the beginning of his political journey. The result also strengthens the Congress’s position in Karnataka’s political landscape, while reaffirming Bagalakote as a key stronghold for the party.
