Chetan Ahimsa stands firm amid row over Dr Rajkumar memorial land, warns of legal action

Bengaluru: Actor Chetan Ahimsa has reiterated his stand in the controversy surrounding the allotment of two-and-a-half acres of land for the memorial of legendary actor Dr Rajkumar, even as he expressed regret over the manner in which events unfolded. Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Chetan criticised Kannada activists led by Sa Ra Govindu for staging a protest outside his residence and allegedly issuing threats.

The controversy erupted after Chetan questioned the government’s decision to allocate land for the memorial, triggering strong reactions from pro-Kannada groups. On Saturday, a group of activists gathered outside his house demanding an apology, leading to tense scenes. Though Chetan issued an apology to Rajkumar’s fans, he clarified that it was under pressure and not a withdrawal of his views.

“I stand by my statement even today. The words used by Sa Ra Govindu were inappropriate. If they disagreed with my opinion, they could have done so in a civil manner on an appropriate platform instead of coming to my house and behaving like hooligans,” he said.

Chetan further alleged that such actions were tarnishing the legacy of Dr Rajkumar. “We are all admirers of Rajkumar. But such behaviour in his name brings disrepute,” he remarked, adding that intimidation and threats cannot be justified under any circumstances.

He emphasised the importance of freedom of expression, stating that everyone has the right to voice their opinions. “If anyone is hurt, I regret that. But I will not accept threats or coercion,” he said. Chetan also indicated that he is consulting legal experts and may pursue legal action against those involved in the protest.

Clarifying his earlier remarks, the actor said his comments were not directed against Rajkumar personally. “If he were alive, he himself might have opposed such land allotments. My intention was to raise a broader issue, not target an individual,” he added.

The actor concluded by stating that future steps would be decided after discussions with legal advisors.
