Charmadi Ghat Road Expansion Plan Raises Environmental Concerns
Charmadi Ghat road expansion is being planned at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore, while environmentalists seek expert advice and geological studies before construction begins.
The Charmadi Ghat road is once again drawing attention as plans move ahead to expand an important section of the national highway. The National Highways Authority of India has prepared a report for the proposed work, with the estimated project cost placed at around Rs 400 crore.
The development has also brought back memories of the severe landslides that affected the region in 2019. Environmental groups and nature enthusiasts are now urging authorities to consult geological and environmental experts before finalising the detailed project report or starting work.
Charmadi Ghat is known for its steep hills, winding roads, dense greenery and waterfalls. The route is an important connection between the coastal and Malnad regions and forms part of the national highway corridor connecting Vellipura and BC Road.
According to the available project details, the proposed road expansion report has already been submitted to the central government. The next stage is expected to involve preparation of a detailed project report before a final decision is taken on construction.
The proposed development covers roughly 24 kilometres of the ghat section. Around 13 kilometres falls within the Chikkamagaluru side, while approximately 11.2 kilometres is within Dakshina Kannada district.
Another major road development is also planned on the Dakshina Kannada side. A project estimated at around Rs 343 crore has reportedly received approval for improvements to the hairpin curves. A separate report concerning road development through the hilly and steep sections has also been submitted to the central government.
For environmentalists, the concern is not simply about widening the road. The terrain itself makes construction more complicated. Cutting into hills to create additional road space can affect the stability of soil layers and rocks above the highway.
That concern is particularly strong because Charmadi Ghat has experienced serious landslides in the past. In 2019, intense rainfall caused major slope failures in the area, damaging portions of the road and surrounding hill sections.
Experts who visited the region at the time had reportedly highlighted the geological conditions and the possibility of further landslide risks. With another major road project now being considered, environmental groups believe those lessons should be taken into account before construction begins.
They have called for detailed geological studies along with environmental assessments. Their argument is that road development in a sensitive hill region should not be approached in the same way as construction on flat terrain.
The use of modern engineering methods has also been suggested to reduce the impact on the hills. Supporters of the expansion say improved road infrastructure could benefit traffic movement and connectivity, but environmental safeguards will be important because of the regions terrain.
The issue has become more significant as the larger national highway project between Vellipura and BC Road moves closer to completion. The Charmadi Ghat stretch remains an important part of the route, making its development crucial for completing the corridor.
The geological survey report is now said to have reached the central government. The next major step will depend on the governments decision regarding the detailed project report and further approvals.
For people who regularly use the Charmadi route, better road infrastructure could make travel easier. At the same time, local residents and environmental groups are concerned that poorly planned hill cutting could create problems that become more difficult to manage during heavy rainfall.
The debate is therefore likely to continue around how the expansion should be carried out rather than whether connectivity needs to improve. Environmentalists want technical experts to be involved from the planning stage itself so that construction methods can account for the regions geological conditions.
As authorities consider the next stage of the project, the focus is expected to remain on balancing road connectivity with environmental protection. A carefully designed project using appropriate technology and expert assessments could help address some of the concerns surrounding the proposed Charmadi Ghat expansion.
