According to statistics from the last one year, 1,889 children were diagnosed with cancer in the state, out of which 312 children lost their lives and have recently become a focal point of discussion in the Karnataka Legislative Council.
As of February 2026, health experts and the state government are acknowledging that childhood cancer is no longer a “rare” occurrence but a growing crisis that requires urgent structural changes.
According to the latest data from the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO) and the state health department:
An estimated 1,882 to 1,889 new childhood cancer cases were recorded in 2025. Bengaluru remains the hotspot with 349 cases registered in the last year alone. As the state’s premier center, Kidwai handles an immense load, with over 120 children visiting the pediatric oncology wing daily for treatment and follow-ups.
While 312 children tragically lost their lives last year, doctors maintain that over 70% of childhood cancers are curable if caught in the early stages.
Why are cases rising?:

More parents are now seeking medical help rather than relying on alternative medicine, which brings more cases into the official registry.
In light of these shocking statistics, the Karnataka government has announced several major infrastructure projects:
“A Cancer Hospital in Every District”: Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil recently stated a goal to establish a dedicated cancer hospital and a super-specialty center in all 31 districts to decentralize care from Bengaluru.
Plans are underway to add 450 new beds to Kidwai, making it a 1,200-bed facility—the largest government-run hospital in Bengaluru.
To save families from traveling long distances, Daycare Chemotherapy Centres are being set up in all district hospitals.
A residential school near Kidwai is being planned so that children from across the state can continue their education while receiving long-term treatment.
