Bengaluru Metro Purple Line Speed Reduced During Maintenance Work

Train services on Bengaluru Metro’s Purple Line continue to operate normally, but passengers travelling between Benniganahalli and Baiyappanahalli may notice a slight increase in journey time due to ongoing maintenance work.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited has introduced a temporary speed restriction on trains operating over an open web girder between the two stations. The maximum permitted speed on the structure has been reduced from the usual 65 kmph to 40 kmph as a precautionary safety measure.

According to BMRCL, the restriction has been introduced while scheduled maintenance activities are being carried out on the open web girder. A specialised team is conducting periodic inspections of the structure under technical supervision and undertaking the required maintenance work.

The lower speed is intended to provide an additional safety margin while maintenance and technical monitoring activities are in progress. Such temporary restrictions are a standard precaution when work is being carried out around railway or metro infrastructure.

For regular Purple Line commuters, the important point is that there is no suspension of train services because of the work. Trains will continue to operate along the route, although the speed restriction could result in a small difference in overall travel time.

Work expected to finish in October
BMRCL expects the maintenance work to be completed by the second week of October 2026. Once the work is finished, the temporary speed restriction will be reviewed based on a technical assessment of the structure.

The corporation has said that the precautionary maintenance approach is aimed at keeping metro operations safe and reliable. The inspection and repair activities are being carried out under technical supervision to ensure the structure remains suitable for regular train operations.

The Benniganahalli and Baiyappanahalli stretch is an important section of the Purple Line, and the temporary restriction may be noticeable to passengers who use this part of the network regularly.

While commuters may have to allow a little extra time for their journey, the decision to lower the speed during maintenance is primarily a safety measure. Normal operating speeds are expected to be reconsidered after the work and subsequent technical evaluation are completed.
