Belagavi: 6,000 Policemen Deployed for Winter Session Security, Health and Comfort Ensured
Belagavi: The Karnataka Legislative Assembly’s winter session, which will be held from December 8 to 19 at the Suvarna Vidhan Soudha in Belagavi, has prompted the deployment of 6,000 police personnel to ensure the safety and security of the event.
Special provisions have also been made to look after the health and well-being of the officers during the chilly winter days. As temperatures in Belagavi have already dropped to a minimum of 14°C, the weather is expected to dip further, with the local meteorological department forecasting temperatures as low as 12°C during the session.
Such cold weather conditions can be harsh for the police force, many of whom will be working in the open or on outdoor patrols. To address these concerns, extensive measures have been put in place. “Police personnel will be accommodated at various locations including police quarters, Chaitanya Barracks, and labor hostels.
Additionally, a ‘tent city’ is being set up at Shindolli village near the Suvarna Vidhan Soudha to house 2,500 personnel. Special arrangements, including cots, blankets, and bed sheets, will be provided to help officers withstand the cold weather,” said officials overseeing the arrangements.
To safeguard the health of the police officers, high-quality food, purified drinking water, and warm showers will be made available. Cylinders and large pots have been brought in to ensure hot water for showers, and mosquito repellents will be provided to prevent any discomfort from insects. The personnel will also have access to entertainment facilities like music players, TVs, mobile chargers, and pan facilities.
In an added security measure, 11 drones will be deployed for surveillance around the assembly hall and surrounding areas. “For the first time, drones will be part of our security apparatus. Along with 6 IPS officers and 16 other senior officials overseeing the security operations, dog squads and bomb detection teams will be ready for any eventuality,” stated a senior police officer.
The total cost of ensuring the security, accommodations, meals, and overall comfort of the police personnel during the session is estimated at ₹5 crore, with provisions for any contingencies arising from the security measures in light of recent incidents such as the bomb explosion in New Delhi.
This year’s arrangements will build on the successful measures implemented in previous years, ensuring the personnel are well-equipped and prepared to carry out their duties efficiently. The police force’s readiness, discipline, and comfort have been prioritized to ensure a smooth and secure winter session.
