School holiday announced in 4 districts on August 18 due to heavy rain

School holiday: India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued extremely heavy rainfall, the red alert for three coastal districts, Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikkamagaluru district administration has declared a holiday for all schools for today, August 18, 2025.

Due to continuous heavy rainfall and a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), school holidays have been declared in these districts of Karnataka.

Dakshina Kannada: The district administration has declared a holiday for all anganwadis, and government and private schools up to high school on Monday, August 18. This decision was made as a precautionary measure due to the heavy rains and strong winds lashing the district.

Udupi: A holiday has been announced for schools and colleges in Udupi on August 18. The IMD has issued a red alert for the district, and the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students.

Uttara Kannada: A holiday has been announced for schools and colleges in Uttara Kannada on August 18. The IMD has issued a red alert for the district, and the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students.

Chikkamagaluru: Holidays have been declared for schools in specific taluks, including Koppa, Sringeri, Mudigere, N R Pura, and Kalasa, as well as in the hoblis of Aldur, Vastare, Khandya, Avathi, and Jagar within Chikkamagaluru taluk, for Monday, August 18. The Malnad region of the district has been experiencing very heavy rainfall.

The district administration has also issued advisories to residents, urging them to take necessary precautions, avoid low-lying areas, and stay away from water bodies.

A red alert signifies a high risk of extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours), which can lead to flooding, landslides, and disruption of daily life. The red alert is in effect for August 17 and 18, 2025.

The IMD has predicted that the intensity of the rain will be extremely heavy over Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts, while Dakshina Kannada is also expected to receive very heavy rainfall.

Following the red alert period, an “orange alert” has been issued for the three coastal districts for August 19 and 20. An orange alert warns of very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm). This weather is being influenced by a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is enhancing monsoon activity over the state.

The district administrations have issued warnings to the public. Residents are advised to stay away from water bodies, avoid low-lying areas, and take all necessary precautions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until at least August 20 due to the high likelihood of strong winds and rough seas.
