Heavy Rainfall: IMD Issued Red Alert for Udupi and Dakshina Kannada Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended a red alert for coastal Karnataka Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district on July 18 and 19. In the southern hinterland, the intensity of rainfall has decreased, but the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning til July 20.

Rainfall is expected to subside in coastal Karnataka from July 19, but the region will remain on orange alert for the time being. The incessant rains have caused significant disruptions, forcing Uttar Kannada District Collector Lakshmi Priya to open 26 care centers across the district.

These centers in Karwar, Kumata and Honnavar taluks are currently sheltering 2,368 flood-affected persons. Reports indicate that the impact of the torrential rains was severe, with three houses completely destroyed, one severely damaged and 18 partially damaged.

Tragically, a house collapsed in Karwar Taluk and one person lost his life. In case of emergency, residents are requested to contact the district administration helpline 1077 or WhatsApp number 94835 11015. Chikmagalur and Hassan districts are also reeling under the effects of heavy rains. Roads and parking areas near the temple in Sringeri were flooded, making access impossible for devotees.

Meanwhile, villages including Mavinur and Kaginere of Sakaleshpur taluk have experienced power outages due to continuous rain. Mudslides affecting National Highway 75, which was recently repaired after being damaged by a landslide in 2018, are more common. Due to ongoing heavy rains, the district collector has announced a holiday for educational institutions in Wayanad district in Kerala on Thursday.
