India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast that heavy rainfall till July 22 in Kerala. The state has already received a lot of rain, with a total of 8.45 cm in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning. IMD heavy rainfall alert till July 22: Declared schools, colleges holiday.
The expected formation of a new low pressure system in the Bay of Bengal by July 19 originating from the South China Sea and Vietnam is likely to further intensify the rainfall. Holiday has been declared for educational institutions in Kozhikode, Palakkad, Idukki, Wayanad, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kannur and Kottayam districts. However, there is no change in pre-scheduled exams.

Meanwhile, Orange Alert has been declared in Malappuram, Koikkod, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts today. A yellow alert has been declared today in districts other than Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. On Tuesday, heavy rains led to the death of eight people in different districts, while one was reported missing.

Sulochana (54) and her son Ranjith (31) died when the wall of their house collapsed in Palakkad’s Vadakkanchery. K Chandrasekaran (62) drowned in a water body at Panur in Kannur. Gopalgetty’s wife Hemavathi (50) died of electrocution in Madhur, Kasaragod. Raji (48) was electrocuted while removing weeds in Thiruwalla, Pathanmanthitta. Molly (42), a resident of Vitthala, died after a banyan tree fell on the car with its trunk.

224 people have been shifted to 14 camps across the state. Traffic has been banned on the gap road from Munnar to Poopara on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway due to landslides.
