CBSE Board introduced new rules for class 6 students from 2026–27 academic
The core of this reform is the introduction of a compulsory third language (R3) from Class 6. The primary goal is to foster multilingualism and ensure students gain proficiency in native Indian languages.
CBSE Board: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially mandated the “Three-Language Formula ” starting from Class 6 for the 2026–27 academic session. This move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023, transitioning schools to a structured R1, R2, and R3 language model.
The New ‘R3 Language Rule’ Breakdown:
The core of this reform is the introduction of a compulsory third language (R3) from Class 6. The primary goal is to foster multilingualism and ensure students gain proficiency in native Indian languages.
R1 – First Language – Primary language of instruction or home language (highest proficiency).
R2 – Second Language – A second language distinct from R1.
R3 – Third Language – New compulsory subject from class 6, must be restrict from R1 and R2.
Key Mandates & Compliance:
The “Two Indian Languages” Rule: At least two of the three languages (R1, R2, or R3) must be native Indian languages listed in the Constitution.
The Status of English: Contrary to some rumours, English is not removed. However, if a student chooses English, the other two languages must be Indian (e.g., Hindi and Kannada, or Sanskrit and Tamil).
Passing Criteria: Students must now pass all three languages to be eligible for the Class 10 Board examinations.
OASIS Portal Deadline: Schools are required to finalize their R3 language options and update the OASIS portal by May 31, 2026.
Implementation Timeline: This starts with Class 6 this year (2026). This cohort will be the first to sit for the full 3-language board exams in 2031.
Why This Matters for Schools:
Schools are currently under pressure to secure textbooks and qualified teachers for diverse regional languages. CBSE has directed schools to begin teaching R3 immediately using locally available materials while the official NCERT/CBSE R3 textbooks are being finalized.
