Davanagere: In a deeply disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves across the city, two auto-rickshaw drivers have been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a minor girl in the jurisdiction of RMC Yard Police Station. The incident, which occurred on the night of Thursday, October 9, came to light only recently after the survivor filed a formal complaint.
According to police reports, the minor girl and a boy—believed to be in a relationship—had arrived together at the KSRTC bus stand in Davanagere. They hired an auto-rickshaw to return home. However, instead of taking them to the intended destination, the two drivers allegedly diverted the vehicle to a secluded area. There, they reportedly attempted to coerce the girl into sexual activity.
When the girl resisted, the accused allegedly snatched her mobile phone and cash before fleeing the scene. The survivor, displaying remarkable courage, approached the RMC Yard Police Station and lodged a complaint. A case was registered at the Women’s Police Station, and both accused were arrested shortly thereafter.
Speaking to the media, Davanagere Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth confirmed the arrests and provided further details. “The girl and boy were in a relationship and had traveled to Davanagere. After disembarking from the bus, they hired an auto.
Instead of taking them to the given address, the drivers took them to an isolated location and pressured the girl into sexual acts. When she refused, they robbed her and fled. Based on her complaint, we registered a case and arrested both accused. Further investigation is underway,” she said.
The police have booked the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused are currently in custody, and their interrogation is ongoing. Authorities are also examining whether the duo has a history of similar offenses.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of minors and women using public transport, especially in semi-urban and urban areas. Citizens and activists have called for stricter background checks on auto drivers, installation of GPS tracking systems in public vehicles, and improved surveillance in vulnerable zones.
Police have urged the public, particularly young women, to remain cautious while using private transport services. They have also encouraged citizens to report any suspicious behavior immediately and make use of emergency helplines.
