Sullia Student Dies While Visiting Waterfall in Mauritius

Sullia: A tragic accident claimed the life of a 26-year-old youth from Sulya taluk, Dakshina Kannada, while he was on a sightseeing trip to a local waterfall. Nandan S. Bhat, son of Jayalakshmi from Halguji, Nalkooru village, reportedly slipped and fell at the site on Monday, leading to his untimely death.

Nandan, who was pursuing a Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism in Mauritius on a student visa, was accompanied by fellow students when the incident occurred. The deceased is survived by his mother and sister. The body has been kept at Victoria Hospital, and the family received the news late Monday night.

Following the incident, Nandan’s maternal uncle, Satyanarayana Bhat from Karkala, approached Sulya MP Kote Srinivasa Poojari, requesting immediate assistance to bring the body back to India. Acting on this, MP Poojari wrote to Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, urging prompt intervention.

Additionally, Dakshina Kannada MP Brijesh Chaut has also contacted the central government, seeking all necessary arrangements for repatriation of the body and support for the bereaved family. Local authorities and concerned departments have reportedly taken steps to facilitate a smooth and speedy process.

The unfortunate incident highlights the need for increased safety measures at tourist spots, especially for young travelers, and raises awareness about providing timely support for Indian students studying abroad in case of emergencies.
