Theft reported at controversial Parashurama Theme Park in Karkala; BJP MLA blames Congress for neglect

Karkala:Thieves have struck the Parashurama Theme Park in Karkala taluk of Udupi district, which has been lying neglected amid prolonged political controversy.

Unidentified miscreants allegedly broke open the doors of the structure and made away with copper sheets that had been installed on the roof, exposing the extent of neglect at the site.

The Parashurama Theme Park was constructed during the previous BJP government and had been at the centre of a major political row over alleged irregularities linked to the Parashurama statue.

Following allegations of financial impropriety, an investigation was also conducted. With no funds being released for maintenance or completion, the theme park has remained shut and abandoned, making it vulnerable to theft and vandalism.

In the wake of the incident, Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar visited the Parashurama Theme Park located at Umikal Hill in Bailoor, marking his first visit to the site in nearly two-and-a-half years. Expressing deep disappointment over the condition of the project, he said the neglect of the theme park was a “tragedy for the history and heritage of Karkala.”

Speaking to reporters, Sunil Kumar alleged that the Congress government was directly and indirectly responsible for the current situation. “It is unfortunate that a project of such cultural and historical significance has been allowed to deteriorate to the point where it has become a hub for illegal activities. The theft would not have happened if the government had shown even basic responsibility,” he said.

He further stated that funds amounting to ₹4.5 crore, sanctioned during the BJP government’s tenure, are yet to be released. “The money approved by the BJP government is still pending. The government must immediately release these funds and open the Parashurama Theme Park to the public,” he demanded.

He accused the state government of withholding funds for political reasons. “Development projects should not be stalled because of politics. The government must wake up before public patience reaches a breaking point,” he warned.

Sunil Kumar also stressed the need to make the theme park functional before the next Mastakabhisheka, so that tourists and devotees can visit the site. “From a development and tourism perspective, this project is important. It should be revived immediately for the benefit of the public,” he said.

Police are expected to register a case regarding the theft and investigate the incident. Meanwhile, the episode has reignited political debate over the fate of the Parashurama Theme Park and the alleged neglect of heritage projects in coastal Karnataka.
