Social media backlash linked to suicide of doctor from prominent Ankola family

Ankola (Uttar Kannada): In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the coastal district, a member of a well-known family with a long-standing presence in the social and medical fields allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Hattikeri village of Ankola taluk. The deceased has been identified as Rajeev Pikale, a senior member of the Pikale family, which has been serving the medical sector in Karwar for over two generations.

According to the police, Rajeev Pikale allegedly shot himself using a licensed double-barrel gun at his residence. Preliminary investigation suggests that severe mental distress caused by alleged social media harassment may have driven him to take the extreme step.

The Pikale family runs a reputed hospital in Karwar and is widely respected for its contribution to healthcare. Rajeev Pikale was managing the pharmaceutical division of the hospital. Police sources said that a few days ago, a YouTuber had uploaded a video accusing the hospital of supplying expired medicines. The video went viral on social media platforms, triggering widespread criticism and online attacks against Rajeev Pikale and his family.

Though Rajeev Pikale reportedly issued an apology regarding the allegations, the continued circulation of the video and online comments allegedly took a toll on his mental health. Family sources indicated that he was deeply disturbed by the damage to the family’s reputation, built over decades of service in the medical field.

Police said Rajeev Pikale was living alone at his house in Hattikeri, while other family members, including his children who are also doctors, are based in Bengaluru. He is said to have shared his emotional distress with family members in recent days.

During the spot inspection, police recovered a death note in which Rajeev Pikale reportedly stated that he alone was responsible for his death. “A death note has been found, and it does not blame anyone directly. However, all aspects, including the role of social media harassment, are being examined,” a senior police officer said.

The Pikale family is also known for its contributions to social and political life in Karwar. In recognition of their service, the Karwar City Municipal Council had named a road after the family, underscoring their standing in the community.

The incident has reignited concerns over the impact of social media trials, online shaming, and unchecked allegations on individuals’ mental health, particularly professionals in sensitive sectors like healthcare. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and said further investigation is underway to ascertain all circumstances surrounding the incident.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, authorities and experts urge seeking professional help or reaching out to local support services.
