Retired deputy SP shoots himself to death

Davanagere: In a tragic incident, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) died by suicide after allegedly shooting himself at his residence in Davanagere on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Hanumantappa H.Y. Turai (70), a former police officer known for his service in the Vijayanagar region.

According to preliminary information, Hanumantappa was reportedly battling severe mental depression for the past few months. Family members and close associates revealed that he often appeared withdrawn and was under emotional distress.

On the day of the incident, he was alone at home when he is said to have used a licensed barrel gun to shoot himself. Relatives, who rushed to the spot after hearing the gunshot, found him unresponsive.

Police personnel from KTJ Nagar Police Station immediately visited the residence and initiated a detailed inspection. The forensic (SUKO) team also conducted a thorough examination of the scene and collected evidence, including the weapon used in the act. The body has been shifted for post-mortem, and an unnatural death case has been registered.

Hanumantappa Turai had served in the Kudligi subdivision of Vijayanagar district before retiring from service in 2014. After his retirement, he had settled in Davanagere with his family. Locals who knew him expressed shock over the incident, recalling him as a disciplined officer and a calm individual.

This tragic event adds to a disturbing rise in mental health–related suicides across the state, including recent cases involving students and public servants. Police officials have urged citizens to seek timely help if they or someone they know is struggling with mental stress or depression.

A detailed investigation is underway, and further information will be released after the completion of forensic and post-mortem reports.
