Man attempts suicide in Banahatti court during divorce hearing
Bagalkote In a incident, a 35-year-old man attempted suicide by consuming poison inside the Banahatti Court premises in Bagalkote district on Wednesday while his divorce case was being heard.
The man has been identified as Yakub Doddamani, a resident of Jagadal village. He reportedly consumed poison right in front of the judge during the court proceedings. He was immediately rushed to Jamkhandi Taluk Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Banahatti police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. According to sources, Yakub and his wife had been facing marital disputes for quite some time. Frequent quarrels between the couple eventually led them to file for divorce.
As part of the legal process, both were present before the court on Wednesday for the scheduled hearing. During the proceedings, Yakub suddenly consumed poison in the courtroom, shocking everyone present.
A letter allegedly written by him to the judge has also surfaced, in which he reportedly mentioned suspicions about his wife’s alleged illicit relationship and the mental trauma he had been going through.
Speaking to the media, Yakub’s relative Sadashiva Doddamani said that elders in the family had made several attempts to reconcile the couple, but the disputes continued. “There were regular fights between them. Despite efforts from family members, they could not live together peacefully.
Today there was a court hearing, and suddenly my brother tried to take this extreme step,” he said. Police officials stated that a detailed investigation would be carried out to ascertain the exact reasons behind the suicide attempt.
