Gold-Oriented Killing: Neighbour arrested for murder of 69-Year-Old Woman in Nelamangala
Gold-Oriented Killing: A 69-year-old woman was allegedly murdered and robbed of her gold jewellery inside her home in Nelamangala town, sending shockwaves through the locality.
The Nelamangala Town Police have arrested the accused, identified as Shivakumar, who was residing in the same neighbourhood as the victim.
The deceased, Shobha (69), lived with her ailing husband on Pete Beedi. The couple had no children, and Shobha had been the sole caregiver for her husband, who has been bedridden for the past 12 years following a brain stroke.
Police said the accused was aware that the elderly couple lived alone and allegedly targeted them after noticing the gold ornaments worn by Shobha. According to investigators, the incident occurred around 4 pm when Shobha returned home.
The accused allegedly followed her and entered the house on the pretext of asking for water. Once inside, he attacked her and strangled her before fleeing with gold jewellery weighing over 100 grams.
A case was registered at the Nelamangala Town Police Station, and a special team led by CPI Bharat Gowda launched a swift investigation. CCTV footage from nearby areas was analysed, which helped police track down and arrest the accused within six hours of the crime.
Speaking to the media, CPI Bharat Gowda said, “The accused had mounting debts and planned the robbery to clear his financial liabilities. He chose the time carefully, knowing that only the elderly couple would be present in the house.”
He added, “When the victim resisted, he strangled her. We were able to solve the case quickly due to timely action and technical evidence.”
Police said part of the stolen jewellery has been recovered. Further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused was involved in similar crimes in the past.
The brutal incident has raised concerns about the safety of senior citizens living alone, with residents urging increased police patrolling in the area.
