Eight killed, over ten injured in horrific Pune highway accident
Pune: A massive road accident on the Mumbai–Bengaluru National Highway near the Selfie Point Bridge on the outskirts of Pune claimed eight lives and left more than ten others injured on Wednesday morning. The collision involved a container truck that lost control and rammed into multiple vehicles, triggering a chain reaction and a massive fire.
According to police reports, the speeding container truck veered out of control near Navale Bridge and crashed into vehicles moving ahead on the busy highway. Over 15 vehicles were damaged in the pile-up, including several cars and smaller trucks.
One car, caught between two large trucks, was completely crushed and dragged for several meters before bursting into flames. The fire quickly spread, engulfing nearby vehicles in a blazing inferno.
At least three vehicles, including the container truck, were completely gutted in the fire. The Pune Fire Brigade and police teams rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the alert. The fire was eventually brought under control after a prolonged effort, but not before extensive damage had been done. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where some are reported to be in critical condition.
Pune City Police DCP Sambhaji Kadam, who was at the scene, confirmed that five people were killed on the spot and more than ten sustained injuries. “We have ensured that all the injured are receiving proper medical treatment. Some are in a serious condition, and arrangements have been made for advanced care,” he said.
Initial investigations suggest that the truck lost control due to overspeeding, leading to the catastrophic crash. However, officials have not ruled out possible brake failure or driver fatigue as contributing factors. “A detailed probe will determine the exact cause of the accident,” DCP Kadam added.
The accident caused massive traffic congestion on the highway, with vehicles stranded for several kilometers. Police have diverted traffic to alternative routes to ease the jam. Efforts are underway to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident. Police teams are examining CCTV footage from the highway and conducting mechanical inspections of the container truck. The accident has once again raised serious concerns over speeding and road safety on the Pune–Bengaluru stretch, which has witnessed several fatal accidents in recent months.
As of now, the situation on the highway is under control, and police have appealed to motorists to maintain caution and follow traffic rules.
