Child rights panel takes suo motu cognisance of viral video involving minor in Yadgir

Yadgir : The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has taken suo motu cognisance of a viral video allegedly showing inappropriate behaviour by a self-styled godman, Mallikarjun Mutya, towards a minor girl in Yadgir district. The Commission has directed the district police to conduct a detailed probe and submit a report at the earliest.

The incident reportedly occurred in Mahal Roja village of Shahapur taluk in Yadgir district. Following the circulation of the video on social media platforms, widespread outrage erupted, prompting the child rights body to intervene. Commission Chairperson Shashidhar Kosumbe confirmed that the panel has formally registered a complaint and sought immediate action.

In an official communication to the Yadgir Superintendent of Police, the Commission instructed authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure appropriate legal action. “We have taken suo motu cognisance of the incident after the video came to our attention. The district police have been directed to conduct an inquiry and submit a factual report. Further action will be initiated based on the findings,” Kosumbe said.

According to officials, the viral video allegedly shows the accused holding the minor girl by her neck, lifting her, and placing her on a cot, along with other acts considered inappropriate and objectionable. The footage, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, triggered strong reactions from the public, child rights activists, and local residents, who demanded strict action against the accused.

Police sources said they have begun preliminary verification of the video and are gathering information about the circumstances under which the incident took place. Authorities are also working to establish the identity of the minor and record statements from relevant individuals.

Mallikarjun Mutya, believed to be around 26 years old, is a resident of Mahal Roja village and has gained popularity in parts of north Karnataka through social media. He is known among followers as a self-proclaimed spiritual figure, with some devotees referring to him as “Appaji” or considering him a divine personality.

He maintains an active presence on platforms such as Instagram and YouTube, where he has built a significant follower base. His videos, often portraying spiritual or devotional activities, have attracted considerable attention in recent years.

Police officials stated that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation. “We are verifying the authenticity of the video and collecting all relevant evidence. Necessary action will be taken as per law after completing the inquiry,” a senior police officer said.
