19-year-old dies by suicide in Bagalkote; harassment allegations trigger ‘love jihad’ row

Bagalkote, : A 19-year-old girl died by suicide in Bagalkote, with her family alleging sustained harassment by a youth from another community as the cause. The incident has sparked controversy after some groups termed it a case of “love jihad,” even as police continue their investigation.
The deceased, identified as Bhoomika Tippannavar, was a resident of Navanagar Sector 48. She had completed her diploma and was working at a tyre shop. According to her family, she had been in contact for the past few years with a youth identified as Dongri Saab, an autorickshaw driver in the city.
Family members allege that Dongri had been repeatedly harassing Bhoomika, pressuring her to maintain a relationship and insisting on marriage. Despite the family’s objections, the two remained in touch. Bhoomika’s mother, who has filed a complaint at the Navanagar Police Station, stated that Dongri had even visited their house in the past seeking her daughter’s hand in marriage, which the family had refused.
Relatives further claimed that the accused would frequently call and message Bhoomika, allegedly pressuring her to meet him and spend time together. They also alleged that he would wait near their house and create disturbances. According to the family, the continued harassment and pressure pushed the young woman to take the extreme step.
The case has drawn additional attention after a photograph of Bhoomika wearing a hijab surfaced on social media and went viral, leading to speculation and multiple interpretations. However, officials have not confirmed any link between the photograph and the circumstances of her death.
Meanwhile, some Hindu organisations have alleged that the case involves forced conversion and have described it as “love jihad,” demanding strict action against the accused. They have also raised concerns over alleged inaction and called for a transparent investigation.
There are also claims from activists that a death note may exist, though this has not been officially confirmed by the police. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and stated that all angles, including harassment allegations, are being probed.
Police sources said a case has been registered based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family, and further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the suicide.
