14-year-old daughter of senior railway official killed mother and teenage brother

Lucknow:A 14-year-old girl of a senior railway ministry official, posted in Delhi, shot dead her mother and elderly teenage brother while taking a nap in the afternoon inside a bungalow below the Gautampalli police station in Lucknow on Saturday afternoon, police officials said.

After killing the two, the underage girl, who was not in good mental health, also tried to injure herself by cutting her wrists with a belt, said Lucknow Police Commissioner (CP) Sujeet Pandey. At the time of the incident, the officer was in Delhi, where he was posted. The girl was admitted to hospital, said the police commissioner.

Police said the girl, who is a trained shooter and pervasive user of weapons, used a .22 rifle born in crime. Director General of Police (DGP) Hitesh Chandra Awasthi visited the country.

Pandey said the girl fired three bullets – one hit a mirror and the other two killed her mother and brother. He stated that the girl wrote the words ‘disqualified mirror’ on the bathroom mirror. The act reflected the girl’s mental instability and that she was seeking immediate medical attention to recover, he added.

He also said the girl had been questioned in front of her maternal grandparents and she confessed to committing the crime. The bullet used in the crime was taken based on its discovery, Pandey said.

The bullet-riddled bodies of the victims were found lying on a bed inside their room, he added. The girl herself warned her mother’s relatives and house workers about the incident.

The police commissioner said Bajpai was a senior official of the Indian Railway Traffic Services at North Railways and he had held a senior position in Lucknow in the past. He was currently executive director at the railway ministry and mostly stayed in Delhi while his family resided in Lucknow, Pandey added.

Even on Saturday, he was in Delhi and arrived in Lucknow late in the evening after being informed of the event.

Pandey said police were first notified around 3:45 p.m. Relatives of the victims were present at the house when police arrived there, he said. Two of the workers at the victims’ house had confirmed that the girl’s mother and brother were alive in the morning and they had met them then.

“We have called a team of forensic experts and a team of dogs to examine the site and further investigations are underway,” the commissioner added.
