India scripted history by lifting maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup
ICC Women’s ODI World Cup: India scripted history on Sunday by clinching their first-ever ICC Women’s One Day International (ODI) World Cup title after defeating South Africa in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
In a thrilling contest, hosts India outplayed South Africa by 52 runs to claim the 2025 Women’s World Cup crown — marking a landmark moment in Indian women’s cricket.
Batting first, India posted a commanding total of 299 runs, powered by steady partnerships and aggressive middle-order batting. Chasing the formidable target, South Africa began well but faltered under pressure as India’s bowlers tightened their grip in the middle overs.
The Proteas, despite a promising start, were bowled out for 246 runs in 45.3 overs, handing India a memorable 52-run victory.
South African skipper Laura Wolvaardt fought valiantly, scoring a brilliant century that kept her team in the hunt for most of the innings. However, her dismissal in the crucial phase turned the tide decisively in India’s favour. Contributions from Tazmin Brits (23), Marizanne Kapp (25), and Chloé Tryon (35) were not enough to take South Africa over the line.
The Indian bowling attack, led by its pace spearheads and disciplined spinners, held their nerve in front of a roaring home crowd. Their fielding intensity and tactical brilliance ensured that the pressure never eased off the South Africans.
With this victory, India not only secured their maiden ODI World Cup but also announced their arrival as a dominant force in women’s international cricket.
