Hardik Pandya captain for LSG in IPL 2027

The decision comes right after a tough IPL 2026 season for LSG, where the team finished at the bottom of the points table (10th place) with just 4 wins out of 14 matches.

Rishabh Pant has stepped down as the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The franchise released an official statement confirming they accepted his request to be relieved of his leadership duties with immediate effect. Hardik Pandya captain for LSG in IPL 2027.

The decision comes right after a tough IPL 2026 season for LSG, where the team finished at the bottom of the points table (10th place) with just 4 wins out of 14 matches.

According to franchise sources, Pant felt that balancing the captaincy while trying to regain his peak batting form was becoming too heavy a burden. He expressed to the management that it would be “selfish” to continue leading after a disappointing season.

After being picked up by LSG for a record-breaking ₹27 crore in the mega auction, Pant struggled to find his explosive rhythm, managing 312 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 138.05 this season. Across his two seasons leading LSG, the team won 10 matches and lost 18.

LSG’s Director of Cricket, Tom Moody, noted that the franchise is now focusing on “collective rebuilding and restructuring.” While Pant is expected to continue with the franchise strictly focusing on his batting and wicketkeeping, reports indicate that management is looking at names like Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh as potential candidates to take over the leadership armband.

Hardik Pandya will replace Rishabh Pant?

There are significant rumors swirling around the IPL circuit that Hardik Pandya might move to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2027 season, especially following Rishabh Pant’s decision to step down from the captaincy.

Hardik Pandya cannot simply “join” another team mid-cycle at his own whim. For this move to happen, he would either need to be traded by Mumbai Indians (MI) during the upcoming trade window, or MI would have to release him into the auction pool, allowing LSG to bid for him.

Why the Rumors Make Sense:

LSG’s Leadership Vacuum: With Pant giving up the captaincy to focus purely on his batting and wicketkeeping, LSG is actively looking for an experienced, high-profile Indian captain to lead their rebuilding phase.

Pandya’s Proven Captaincy Track Record: Hardik has a highly successful resume as an IPL captain, having led the Gujarat Titans to a title in 2022 and a runner-up finish in 2023.

The Mumbai Indians Situation: Hardik’s return to Mumbai Indians has been a turbulent ride both on and off the field. If MI decides they want to transition their leadership or restructure their squad composition after recent mixed seasons, a high-profile trade deal could be mutually beneficial.

What needs to happen for this trade to work?

For LSG to acquire Hardik Pandya via a trade, they would need to match his substantial purse value. Since LSG already spent a record ₹27 crore on Rishabh Pant, trading for another top-tier player like Hardik would require complex financial maneuvering, likely involving trading away other high-value players to balance their remaining purse.
