Union Budget 2026 Live: In her Union Budget 2026-27 speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman categorized these seven high-speed railway corridors as “Growth Connectors,” marking a shift in focus from standalone infrastructure to regional economic integration.
These corridors are designed to function as high-velocity arteries connecting India’s tech hubs, industrial centers, and strategic gateways.
The 7 “Growth Connectors”
The proposed routes create two massive regional clusters:
The Southern High-Speed Quadrilateral This cluster aims to integrate the “Silicon Valley of India” with other major southern metros, effectively turning the region into a single, high-speed economic zone.
Mumbai – Pune
Pune – Hyderabad
Hyderabad – Bengaluru
Hyderabad – Chennai
Chennai – Bengaluru
The Eastern Connectivity Backbone These routes extend the high-speed network into the Hindi heartland and provide a critical link toward the Northeast.
Delhi – Varanasi
Varanasi – Siliguri (A strategic gateway to North Bengal and the Northeast)
The FM emphasized that these corridors are not just about connecting “A to B” but about developing the tier-2 and tier-3 cities along these routes into new growth centers.
Positioned as an environmentally sustainable alternative to short-haul flights and road transport. To support these and other projects, the Railway Capital Expenditure (Capex) has been hiked to a record ₹12.2 lakh crore for FY27.
Building on the Namo Bharat (RRTS) model, which has already shown significant employment impact, these corridors are expected to generate millions of “man-days” during construction and sustained jobs thereafter.
