Towing operations return to Bengaluru amid traffic concerns

Bengaluru: After a brief suspension due to public backlash, towing operations have resumed in Bengaluru in an effort to address worsening traffic congestion. The move, led by the Greater Bengaluru Authority in coordination with the police department, marks a renewed push to regulate parking and improve road discipline in the city.

The earlier halt in towing was triggered by complaints against staff behaviour, with several incidents of alleged misconduct sparking anger among citizens. However, the absence of enforcement soon led to unintended consequences, as motorists began parking vehicles indiscriminately across roads and public spaces.

In many areas, vehicles were left unattended for days, while some owners used public roads as long-term parking spots for old or unused vehicles. This contributed to increased traffic congestion, especially on key arterial roads, making daily commuting more difficult for residents.

Recognising the growing problem, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar had earlier announced plans to bring back towing operations. Following his statement, authorities moved quickly to prepare for the relaunch, ensuring better regulation and oversight this time.

As part of the initiative, 10 towing vehicles have been deployed across five civic zones, with each zone allocated two vehicles. Each team comprises police personnel, including an inspector and a constable, along with trained staff from the authority responsible for towing operations.

A key feature of the revamped system is the installation of CCTV cameras on towing vehicles. These cameras will document the entire process, helping maintain transparency and prevent disputes between citizens and officials.

The authorities have decided to prioritise areas with heavy traffic flow and strict no-parking restrictions. The aim is to minimise road blockages and improve overall traffic movement in the city.

Officials have urged vehicle owners to adhere to parking rules and avoid violations. The reintroduction of towing is expected to bring discipline back to Bengaluru’s roads while addressing the concerns that led to its earlier suspension.
