SIM Binding Deadline Extended in India Giving Users Extra Time to Secure Messaging Apps
India’s telecom department has extended the SIM binding deadline to December 31, 2026, ensuring WhatsApp, Telegram, and other apps continue to work without a SIM card until then.

The Indian government has announced a major relief for mobile users and tech companies by extending the SIM binding deadline. Originally set to take effect earlier, the new timeline now allows users to continue using apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal without a SIM card until December 31, 2026. The rule will officially come into effect on January 1, 2027.
Under the SIM binding regulations, messaging apps will require an active SIM card in the device to function. Without a SIM, these apps will not operate, and users logged in on computers will be automatically logged out within six hours. This step aims to strengthen cyber security by ensuring app accounts are linked to verified mobile numbers.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) introduced the SIM binding rules last year in November, targeting potential cyber frauds. Many apps were previously allowing services without requiring the mobile number associated with the device, which created vulnerabilities that could be exploited by cybercriminals both domestically and internationally.
Tech companies including Meta and Apple had requested additional time to comply, citing technical challenges within their ecosystems. Apple highlighted the complexity of implementing SIM binding across its devices and services, while Meta explained that proper implementation required careful technical adjustments. The government responded by granting the extension, giving companies more time to adapt while maintaining the goal of enhanced security.
With the new deadline, users can continue to operate their messaging apps normally without interruptions until the end of 2026. Experts suggest that this extension will give both users and the industry sufficient time to adjust and ensure smooth compliance once the rule comes into effect.
