Udupi : A month after a young businessman died by suicide in Karkala, the case has taken a fresh turn with his wife strongly denying allegations made by his family. The deceased, Sudeep Rai, a resident of Nelyadi in Puttur taluk, had ended his life under mysterious circumstances, triggering a blame game between the two families.
Sudeep’s parents had earlier alleged that his wife, Soumya Shetty, was responsible for his death, accusing her of harassment and creating disturbances at their residence. However, Soumya has now come forward to refute these claims, stating that she had no role in her husband’s suicide.
Speaking on the issue, Soumya said, “I have not done anything that could push Sudeep to take such an extreme step. The allegations made by his parents are completely false. If required, CCTV footage can be verified to prove that I did not create any scene at Nelyadi.”
She further claimed that Sudeep was under stress due to issues within his own family. “He had told me that there were problems at his home and that he was disturbed after visiting his parents. He even mentioned that his family was not supportive of our marriage,” she said.
According to Soumya, Sudeep had left their residence on March 16 to visit his parental home, after which his behaviour reportedly changed. “After returning from his parents’ house, he seemed mentally disturbed. I believe the pressure from his family could have led him to take this step,” she alleged.
Soumya also addressed allegations linked to one Venu Shetty, stating that he had previously approached her with a proposal and was known to have multiple relationships. “He interfered in our personal life and influenced Sudeep’s family. My husband had informed me about this,” she said.
She further added that repeated phone calls were made to Sudeep’s father by Venu Shetty, which she believes contributed to the situation. “He is also responsible for what happened,” she alleged.
Soumya confirmed that she has filed a complaint at the Karkala police station against Sudeep’s family members and Venu Shetty for making false allegations and harassment. Police have begun examining both sides of the claims as part of the ongoing investigation.
The case has now turned complex, with counter-allegations raising questions about the circumstances leading to the young businessman’s death.
