Row erupts in Kayamkulam after UDF leader’s remarks on LDF candidate spark outrage

Kayamkulam : A political controversy has erupted in Kerala’s Kayamkulam constituency after a leader of the Indian Union Muslim League made alleged derogatory remarks against U. Prathibha, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate.

The remarks were made by Irshad Chakkalasseri during an election campaign rally held in support of M. Liju, the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate. Irshad reportedly targeted Prathibha, stating that “physical beauty cannot be used to mislead voters,” triggering widespread criticism and backlash.

The comments have drawn sharp condemnation from political leaders and women’s groups, who termed the statement as sexist and derogatory. Responding strongly, Prathibha said she would initiate legal action against the leader for his remarks.

“These statements are an insult not just to me but to the entire community of women,” Prathibha said. “I will be filing a complaint with the police as well as the Election Commission. Such comments have no place in a democratic election.”

She further expressed disappointment over the conduct of the UDF leadership. “The Congress has had strong women leaders like Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. Leaders like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have actively contested elections. It is shocking that a leader from such a front would make such irresponsible remarks,” she said.

Prathibha also emphasised that she has never resorted to personal attacks in her political career. “Voters look at the mind and integrity of a candidate, not physical appearance. This is character assassination at its worst,” she added.

The LDF candidate further pointed out that several senior leaders, including women, were present on the stage when the remarks were made, yet no one objected. She made it clear that she would not accept any apology from Irshad, stating that the damage caused by such comments cannot be undone easily.

The incident has intensified political tensions in Kayamkulam ahead of the elections, with calls for strict action against those making personal and derogatory remarks during campaigns.
