Youth killed in Holi clash in Uttam Nagar; seven arrested, MCD demolishes accused’s property
New Delhi: Police have intensified action in connection with the killing of a youth during a clash on the day of Holi in Uttam Nagar. Authorities on Saturday arrested two more suspects in the case, taking the total number of arrests to seven, including one minor.
The incident reportedly began after a water balloon filled with colour accidentally fell on a Muslim woman during Holi celebrations, triggering an argument that later escalated into a violent assault.
According to police officials, the victim, identified as Tarun, was allegedly attacked by a group led by the main accused, Nizamuddin. Investigators said the accused and his associates forcibly entered the victim’s house and brutally assaulted him. Tarun sustained serious injuries during the attack and later died while undergoing treatment.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Kushal Pal Singh said officers reached the spot shortly after receiving information about the incident on Wednesday night and launched an investigation.
“During the investigation, five suspects, including a minor, were initially detained. Later, two more accused were identified through CCTV footage and arrested,” the DCP said.
Among those arrested are Umaruddin, his brother Kamruddin and his son Muzaffar, who all belong to the same family. Police said further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and the roles of each accused.
The incident triggered tension in the area, with angry residents staging protests. On Friday, a group of protesters allegedly entered the houses of the accused and set them on fire, further escalating the situation.
Following the unrest, heavy security has been deployed in the locality. Personnel from the Delhi Police, Rapid Action Force and paramilitary units have been stationed in Uttam Nagar to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Saturday carried out a bulldozer operation against the property belonging to the main accused, Nizamuddin. Officials said the structure was allegedly constructed illegally.
Videos of the demolition circulated widely on social media, showing bulldozers tearing down the building amid tight police security.
Reacting to the development, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party welcomed the action taken by the authorities. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva strongly condemned the violence and said strict action against the accused sends a clear message that such incidents will not be tolerated.
He also supported the demolition of what he described as an illegally constructed property belonging to the accused family.
Police officials said the situation in the area is now under control, but security forces will continue to remain deployed as a precautionary measure. Authorities have appealed to residents to maintain peace and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
