Iran prepares funeral for Ali Khamenei in Mashhad amid tensions

Tehran: Iran has begun preparations for the funeral of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in a joint US-Israel airstrike on February 28. Even as tensions remain high across the country, authorities have announced that Khamenei will be laid to rest in his birthplace, Mashhad, one of Iran’s holiest cities.

According to Iranian media reports, the funeral will be held in Mashhad following a public viewing ceremony in the capital, Tehran. However, officials have not yet disclosed the formal schedule for the final rites or the public homage event.

Final rites in Mashhad

Khamenei, who led Iran for nearly 36 years, will be buried near the revered Imam Reza Shrine, a major Shia pilgrimage site. Reports citing semi-official news agencies indicate that his father, Javad Khamenei, was also buried in the same city, adding symbolic significance to the decision.

Mashhad, located in northeastern Iran, is the country’s second-largest city and holds immense religious importance for Shia Muslims. The selection of the city for the burial is being viewed as both a spiritual and political gesture.

Public homage in Tehran

Before the burial in Mashhad, authorities plan to organise a large public viewing ceremony in Tehran to allow citizens and senior officials to pay their respects. The announcement was reportedly shared through channels linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Sources indicate that three days of national mourning have been declared beginning March 4. A condolence gathering is expected to be held at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla prayer complex, where supporters are anticipated to assemble in large numbers.

Despite these announcements, the Iranian administration has not revealed specific timings for either the public ceremony or the burial, citing security concerns amid the volatile regional situation.

Leadership transition

Following Khamenei’s reported death, leadership of the Islamic Republic has been handed over to his son, Mojtaba Khamenei. The succession marks a significant political development in Iran, especially given ongoing regional hostilities.

Security has been tightened across major cities as authorities prepare for the funeral ceremonies. Analysts say the coming days will be crucial for Iran as it navigates both internal transition and external tensions.
