US map recognises Kashmir as integral part of India, sparks global debate
New Delhi: A map released by the United States in connection with the proposed interim bilateral trade agreement between India and America has triggered widespread discussion in diplomatic and political circles.
The map, published by the “United States Trade Representative” (USTR) while outlining details of the India–US trade framework, clearly depicts Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of India.
Significantly, the map also shows Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) within Indian territory, a move that is being seen as a strong diplomatic endorsement of India’s long-standing position on the Kashmir issue.
International observers believe that this representation reflects America’s growing strategic alignment with India and signals a subtle yet firm message to Pakistan. For years, global maps and documents from various international agencies had often shown disputed boundaries.
However, the latest depiction by a key US government body has been interpreted as Washington’s clear acknowledgement of India’s sovereignty over the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir.
The development has come at a time when India–US relations are witnessing new momentum in areas of defence, trade and technology cooperation. Analysts say the inclusion of PoK as part of India in an official US document indicates deepening trust and partnership between the two countries.
Over the last few years, Pakistan had maintained relatively cordial relations with the United States, particularly after India’s strong military actions across the border. Pakistani leaders, including the Prime Minister and Army Chief, had visited Washington on multiple occasions.
Former US President Donald Trump had even praised Pakistan in the past and offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir.
Trump had earlier claimed that he played a role in reducing tensions between the two South Asian neighbours. He also described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great friend” and emphasised the importance of India in America’s global strategy.
Despite occasional diplomatic warmth between Washington and Islamabad, the latest move by the US clearly tilts the balance in favour of India. Experts believe that America’s economic and strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region have made India a crucial partner, while Pakistan’s relevance has gradually diminished.
The map has not only created political ripples in Pakistan but has also been welcomed by Indian policy makers and strategic experts. It is being seen as a significant diplomatic victory for India on the global stage.
While the trade agreement between the two nations is still in the negotiation phase, the release of this map has added a new dimension to bilateral ties. Observers say that such symbolic gestures carry major geopolitical significance and strengthen India’s stand on one of its most sensitive national issues.
As India and the US move closer on multiple fronts, this latest development is expected to further consolidate the growing partnership between the world’s largest democracy and the world’s oldest democracy.
