Indian man shocked by hefty emergency room bill in US after minor knee injury

Washington:An Indian man living in the United States has sparked a wider debate on the high cost of healthcare in America after claiming that he was billed thousands of dollars for a brief visit to a hospital emergency room in New York following a knee injury.

Parth Vijayvargiya, an Indian-origin resident in the US, shared his experience in a now-viral video titled “The extreme cost of healthcare in the US – a real incident.” In the video, he explains why the United States is often described as one of the most expensive countries in the world when it comes to medical treatment.

The incident occurred on December 25 while Vijayvargiya was ice skating in New York with his wife and sister. During the activity, another skater reportedly collided with him, resulting in severe pain in his knee. “I felt it could be a serious injury or even a fracture,” he said, explaining his decision to seek immediate medical attention.

Concerned about the injury, Vijayvargiya went to a nearby hospital’s emergency department. However, he chose not to call an ambulance, citing its high cost in the US. “Ambulance charges here are extremely expensive, so I took a taxi to the hospital instead,” he said.

He spent around one and a half hours in the emergency room, where doctors conducted an X-ray and a physical examination. He was later informed that the injury was muscular in nature. After applying a crepe bandage, doctors discharged him the same day.

The financial impact of the visit became clear only weeks later. Vijayvargiya said that after three weeks, his insurance provider informed him that he would have to pay around 1,400 dollars out of pocket. According to him, his total share amounted to nearly 1,800 dollars, while the insurance company paid an additional 4,000 to 4,500 dollars to the hospital.

Overall, the hospital bill reportedly ranged between 5,800 and 6,300 dollars, which translates to nearly five lakh rupees in Indian currency. “This is why people say America is expensive. Salaries may be higher here, but expenses, especially healthcare, are equally shocking,” he said.

The video triggered a flood of reactions on social media. Many users criticised the US healthcare system, calling it inaccessible and profit-driven. One user commented that even minor injuries should not feel like a financial punishment, while another said it was cheaper to travel to India for dental treatment than to get it done in the US.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over rising healthcare costs in the US, even for insured patients.
