Puttur man attempts suicide by consuming poison inside court premises after marital dispute

Puttur: In a incident, a 35-year-old man allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison inside the Puttur court premises on Thursday, following a prolonged marital dispute with his wife.

The incident occurred in front of the judge at the 5th Additional District and Sessions Court, triggering panic among advocates, court staff and litigants. The man has been identified as Ravi, a resident of Kavu Maniyadka in Puttur taluk.

According to police sources, Ravi and his wife Vidyashree had been embroiled in frequent domestic disputes for some time. Two days ago, Ravi had allegedly attempted to strangulate Vidyashree, following which tensions between the couple escalated and the matter reached the police station.

Sources said divorce talks were underway between the couple, and a formal case was likely to be registered at the Sampya Rural Police Station. Ravi had reportedly been asked by the police to appear at the station on Thursday in connection with the case. However, instead of going to the police station, Ravi arrived directly at the Puttur court premises.

During court proceedings, Ravi suddenly consumed a pesticide in the presence of the judge, shocking everyone present. Court staff and lawyers immediately alerted emergency services, and Ravi was rushed to the Puttur government hospital for first aid. His condition was reported to be critical.

It is learnt that Ravi consumed “Karate,” a pesticide that is available in the market after the ban on endosulfan. Due to the seriousness of his condition, doctors referred him to a hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.

In a dramatic turn of events, both Ravi and his wife Vidyashree were shifted to Mangaluru in the same ambulance, accompanied by medical personnel. Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances that led Ravi to take the extreme step inside the court premises.

The incident has raised serious concerns over security and mental health support mechanisms within court complexes, with legal fraternity members calling for measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
