Parents murder pregnant daughter and attack son-in-law’s family in Hubballi over inter-caste marriage

Hubballi: In a shocking incident in the village of Inam Veerapur in Hubballi taluk, a 19-year-old pregnant woman, Manya Doddamani, was brutally murdered by her parents after she married a man from a different caste.

The attack, which also targeted the groom’s family, took place on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the region. According to sources, Manya, who was six months pregnant, suffered severe injuries to her head and abdomen during the attack.

Despite being rushed to Vivekananda Hospital in the city for treatment, Manya and her unborn child succumbed to their injuries. The condition of the groom’s mother, Renavva, and another family member, Dodappa, remains critical, and they are currently under intensive care.

Hubballi Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar, SP Gunjan Arya, and other officials visited the hospital to gather information from the medical team. To prevent further unrest, heavy police security has been deployed in both the hospital area and Inam Veerapur village.

SP Gunjan Arya confirmed that the accused, Prakashgouda Patil, Veeranagouda Patil, and Arunagouda Patil, have been taken into custody. Police are also considering preventive action against seven to eight others involved in the incident.

A case has been filed at the rural police station in connection with the murder. The incident has its roots in an inter-caste marriage that Manya had entered into with Vivekanand Doddamani, a man from a different caste, about eight months ago.

Despite facing opposition from her family, the couple had been living in Haveri due to safety concerns. However, the young couple had returned to Inam Veerapur recently. On the day of the attack, as Vivekanand and his father worked in the fields, Manya’s family members attacked them.

They later went to the family’s home and assaulted Manya, Renavva, and other relatives with sharp weapons. Earlier, in May, when Manya had married Vivekanand, there was resistance from her family. Despite police intervention and warnings, the situation escalated over time, resulting in the tragic incident.

The case has now sparked wider debates on caste-based violence, highlighting the risks faced by inter-caste couples in rural areas. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are hoping to uncover the full motive behind the attack.
