Courier scam: elderly woman robbed of gold chain in Uttara Kannada

Karwar: In a disturbing incident highlighting the growing threat of doorstep crimes, a 70-year-old woman was robbed of her gold chain by two unidentified men who posed as courier delivery personnel in Bhatkal taluk of Uttara Kannada district.

The incident occurred in the Beleke Garadi Hittalu area, where the victim, Honnamma Madev Naik (70), a local resident, was standing near the road close to her house. According to police sources, two men arrived on a motorcycle and approached the elderly woman claiming they had come to deliver a courier parcel addressed to someone else.

When Honnamma informed them that no such person lived in the area, the accused claimed they were local residents and courier staff. To gain her confidence, they continued the conversation and then asked her for drinking water. Trusting them, the elderly woman went inside her house and brought water. After one of the men drank it, he deliberately asked for more water.

As the woman turned back towards her house to fetch water again, the second man, who was seated behind on the motorcycle, swiftly snatched the gold mangalya chain from her neck. The two accused then sped away from the spot on their motorcycle before anyone could react.

Hearing the woman’s cries for help, nearby residents rushed out and attempted to chase the suspects. However, the miscreants managed to escape via the Shirur toll gate route.

Senior police officials, including DySP Mahesh, Rural CPI Manjunath Lingareddy, and other personnel, visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered at the Bhatkal Rural Police Station, and efforts are underway to identify and nab the accused using CCTV footage from nearby areas and toll booths.
