Hubballi: A 40-year-old civil contractor from Hubballi, identified as Anand Umesh Hegde, was found dead by suicide in a lodge room in Huvinahadagali on Sunday night. The incident has sent shockwaves through the contractor community in the region.
Anand, a resident of Bhavani Nagar in Hubballi, was reportedly staying at Dakshayini Lodge in Huvinahadagali after visiting the town to oversee a civil project. He had secured a government contract for the development and renovation of the Taluk Sports Ground and had been managing the construction work for the past few months.
According to police sources, Anand checked into the lodge on Sunday morning. When his family members were unable to reach him despite repeated phone calls on Monday, they alerted the lodge staff. The reception desk informed the police after knocking on the door several times without a response. Upon opening the room, police found Anand hanging by a cloth tied to the window grill.
He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. Preliminary investigation suggests no suicide note was found at the scene. βThe reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. A case will be registered based on the familyβs complaint,β said a police officer from Huvinahadagali station.
Reports indicate that Anand was a partner in a contracting firm along with his associates Sudhindra and Gaurish. The firm had undertaken several civil works under government tenders in the Vijayanagara region. Police are investigating whether professional or financial stress played a role in the tragedy.
