Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has voiced strong opposition to the proposed land acquisition at Lalbagh Botanical Garden for the city’s tunnel corridor project.
During a site inspection on Sunday, Surya urged the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to conduct a comprehensive study on the potential geological impact of the project, particularly on the ancient rock formations at Lalbagh, which are estimated to be over 300 million years old and designated as a National Geological Monument.
Surya criticized the Karnataka government’s decision to proceed with the tunnel ramp construction without conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or consulting regular walkers and citizens who frequent Lalbagh. He expressed concern that the B-SMILE authorities, who are overseeing the project, have bypassed public consultation and scientific evaluation.
Speaking to the media, Surya said, “The government is attempting to encroach upon one of Bengaluru’s most precious heritage sites. Lalbagh is not just a garden—it’s a geological and cultural treasure. The proposed ramp threatens the integrity of the ancient rock formations and aims to introduce commercial complexes including malls and eateries, which is unacceptable.”
He emphasized that any infrastructure project near Lalbagh must be preceded by a detailed geological and seismic study, especially in light of recent tunnel-related disasters in Uttarakhand. “The central government mandates EIA for such projects. Claiming exemption from EIA is misleading and dangerous,” Surya added.
In his letter to GSI, Surya highlighted the risks of land instability, cracks, and hydrological disruptions that could arise from tunneling activities. Experts have warned that such disturbances could severely affect Lalbagh’s ecosystem and surrounding urban areas.
Surya called for the immediate public release of the geological impact report before any further action is taken. He urged the government to prioritize sustainable mass transit solutions over hasty and potentially destructive tunnel projects. “Bengaluru’s citizens will not allow Lalbagh to be sacrificed for short-sighted development,” he concluded.
